When we asked 10 people to name their style icon, Paddington Bear was not top of their lists. In fact, the poor thing wasn’t even considered. Here at START HQ, we think this marmalade loving chap has been unfairly overlooked in the style stakes. Let’s look at the evidence. Smart coat? Tick. Battered vintage case? Tick. Eccentric wool hat? Tick. This sartorial display wouldn’t be out of place in the trendier parts of Shoreditch or Notting Hill.
The good news is you’re forgiven for missing the fashion credentials of this dapper Peruvian bear. The even better news is you can capture the 21st Century P. Bear look. First you’ll need a duffle coat, and nobody does duffle coats better than Gloverall. For an authentic look we’d recommend Gloverall’s Navy Monty Duffle Coat, but if you didn’t want to be too literal opt for one in grey or black. Next you’ll need a hat. Woolrich has a great Navy Arctic Cap with a fur lining to keep out the chill. Finally a large bag is essential for carrying a generous supply of marmalade sandwiches (or whatever you like to keep close to hand). While a vintage suitcase has a certain air of romance, it’s not always practical, so we’d suggest a WANT les Essentiels de la Vie travel tote or an Eastpak x Krisse Van Assche messenger bag.
Next time you get dressed remember that inspiration comes in all shapes and sizes and while he might be an unlikely style candidate, Paddington Bear is up there with the greats.
