A Karl Lagerfeld Worthy Ensemble /

Last week Shini from Park & Cube contacted us with a rather pressing Fashion dilemma…

She’d been invited to a cocktail party at Printemps in Paris hosted by the Karl Lagerfeld and needed a worthy outfit.   Understanding the plight of such an invitation, we opened up our doors to Shini hours before she was due to hop on the Eurostar and assisted in putting together the above ensemble.

Shini decided on the Alexander Wang streamer dress with a Gladys & Pixie chunky knit – depicted in the beautiful images above taken from Park & Cube blog.

Channel Thursday: Elementary, My Dear Watson /

Another Thursday, another theme to channel. This week it’s all about Sherlock Holmes and his wonderful deerskin cape. A cape keeps one warm, cuts a dashing silhouette and conceals the wearer under a veil of elusiveness (a much needed trait for any budding detective). Holmes obviously understood the merits of a cape.

In lieu of a deerskin option we’ve turned to a close relative to appease our lost childhood dreams of solving crime with a trusty sidekick: wool. The cape in question is Gloverall’s Brown Duffle Cape Coat. A hood in case it rains, large patch pockets for a notepad and pen, draped sleeves and a feminine shape prove Gloverall have thought just about everything. Everything except a magnifying glass and a pocket watch. But as we’re only channelling and not imitating, these omissions can be forgiven.

To Spin or not to Spin..? /

It hasn’t escaped our notice that the Marmite Shoe Award for AW11 goes to the Acne Spin Wedged Brogue. True to  its name, the Spin seems to have caused quite a stir. The fashion world is as split as an 11 year old’s school disco.

We are firmly in the love camp, spearheaded by our very own Brix Smith Start. Season after season we buy the Acne classics. Without fail you can hear at least one pair of Pistol Shorts or Rider Lows stomping around START HQ. But Acne aren’t afraid to take a risk. Enter the Spin Tan Wedged Brogue. Brix is an avid fan of Acne’s classic/contemporary mash up, describing the Spins as ‘quite edgy, a little bit challenging but always iconic.’ We couldn’t have put it better ourselves.

Unlikely Style Icon: Paddington Bear /

When we asked 10 people to name their style icon, Paddington Bear was not top of their lists. In fact, the poor thing wasn’t even considered. Here at START HQ, we think this marmalade loving chap has been unfairly overlooked in the style stakes. Let’s look at the evidence. Smart coat? Tick. Battered vintage case? Tick. Eccentric wool hat? Tick. This sartorial display wouldn’t be out of place in the trendier parts of Shoreditch or Notting Hill.

The good news is you’re forgiven for missing the fashion credentials of this dapper Peruvian bear. The even better news is you can capture the 21st Century P. Bear look. First you’ll need a duffle coat, and nobody does duffle coats better than Gloverall. For an authentic look we’d recommend Gloverall’s Navy Monty Duffle Coat, but if you didn’t want to be too literal opt for one in grey or black. Next you’ll need a hat. Woolrich has a great Navy Arctic Cap with a fur lining to keep out the chill. Finally a large bag is essential for carrying a generous supply of marmalade sandwiches (or whatever you like to keep close to hand). While a vintage suitcase has a certain air of romance, it’s not always practical, so we’d suggest a WANT les Essentiels de la Vie travel tote or an Eastpak x Krisse Van Assche messenger bag.

Next time you get dressed remember that inspiration comes in all shapes and sizes and while he might be an unlikely style candidate, Paddington Bear is up there with the greats.
