The Scarf Maketh Man /

A simple scarf with overcoat.

An inimitable look.

One worn most iconically by Jean-Paul Belmondo and immortalised by Godard in their new wave film collaborations.

Here at START, we think every man should have the chance to achieve Belmondo’s nonchalant cool and that’s why we’re giving you a free Mr. Start lambswool scarf with every mens outerwear purchase until Wednesday, 7th December.

Unlikely Style Icon: Penny Crayon /

Acne Spin Brogues // Acne Romantic Felt Skirt //Nailgirls Pewter Nail Polish // SONIA by Sonia Rykiel Scarf by the Metre // Markus Lupfer You Look Really Good Today Sweater

With her ever so Parisian style coupled with the unmistakable voice of Su Pollard, Penny Crayon incites the need to clash colours, dress somewhat like a geek, and skip around booming about magic stationary.

Though our cartoon watching days are over – first thing in the morning at least – Penny continues to inspire us with her chirpy attitude and ability to wear to wear the same outfit every single day.

Unfortunately for us such simplicity is unattainable due to our lack of possessing a magic crayon, biro, or even pencil to sketch out the same but clean wares every morning. And while this fact makes us slightly jealous, at least we can console ourselves with just as worthy Penny get-up’s such as Acne’s Romantic Felt Skirt and Spin Brogues or the You Look Good Today Jumper from Markus Lupfer.

Don’t count on that felt tip – shop online now.

Practical Fashion /

A new obsession has hit the START team and believe it or not, it’s the puffa jacket.  Once relegated to the depths of 90s fashion faux-pas’, these down-filled wonders have metamorphosed into something quite in-vogue and something we couldn’t face winter without.  It’s perfect fashion meets function garment.   This season, Moncler offers an awesome edit of down-filled, puffa-style jackets that are top of our must-have lists… alarmingly practical, we know!

Unlikely Style Icon: Paddington Bear /

When we asked 10 people to name their style icon, Paddington Bear was not top of their lists. In fact, the poor thing wasn’t even considered. Here at START HQ, we think this marmalade loving chap has been unfairly overlooked in the style stakes. Let’s look at the evidence. Smart coat? Tick. Battered vintage case? Tick. Eccentric wool hat? Tick. This sartorial display wouldn’t be out of place in the trendier parts of Shoreditch or Notting Hill.

The good news is you’re forgiven for missing the fashion credentials of this dapper Peruvian bear. The even better news is you can capture the 21st Century P. Bear look. First you’ll need a duffle coat, and nobody does duffle coats better than Gloverall. For an authentic look we’d recommend Gloverall’s Navy Monty Duffle Coat, but if you didn’t want to be too literal opt for one in grey or black. Next you’ll need a hat. Woolrich has a great Navy Arctic Cap with a fur lining to keep out the chill. Finally a large bag is essential for carrying a generous supply of marmalade sandwiches (or whatever you like to keep close to hand). While a vintage suitcase has a certain air of romance, it’s not always practical, so we’d suggest a WANT les Essentiels de la Vie travel tote or an Eastpak x Krisse Van Assche messenger bag.

Next time you get dressed remember that inspiration comes in all shapes and sizes and while he might be an unlikely style candidate, Paddington Bear is up there with the greats.
