Embrace That Waist…/

I’m a plus size apple shape. I have lots of 50s dresses but what style should I aim for?

The important thing for apple shaped ladies is to embrace that waist! The best way to do this, while still keeping that 50s flair, is to go for a dress with a waist detail such as Carven’s layered skirt dress (3) or a Charles Anastase sleeveless shirt dress (2). For a more sophisticated look, but still sticking with the era, a pencil dress is the way to go. Create a defined waist with a belt, such as Julian J Smith’s Kandinsky print dress (1). But remember; for any body shape the length of your dress is important so don’t be afraid to get it altered so that your legs never look cut off!

We love these elegant yet edgy additions to the START jewellery repertoire.  We love them even more knowing that these beautiful pieces are handcrafted just a hop, skip and jump away from START by jeweller Noemi Klein in her East London studio.

Originating from the West German countryside, Klein began working as a jeweller in East London in 2004. She first started designing and working with metal after being given a cast off piece of machinery by her dentist father, combining her inherited attention to detail and fascination with fancy tools with finding an outlet for her love of fashion, precious materials and unusual imagery. Additional design and silversmithing training at London’s Central Saint Martins and Morley Colleges and an interest in traditional craft and tactile media such as porcelain, silk and natural stones make her approach to jewellery a distinctly modern take on decorative art.

Drawing inspiration from the ephemeral imagery of life and death, favourite reference points have included medieval emblems and the world of the enchanted forest.  Pieces from the current collection are exquisitely detailed and multilayered, featuring diverse figural and floral imagery and reworking elements from vintage jewellery and combining them with an array of precious materials such as silver, gold, coral and semiprecious stones.

An edit of Klein’s necklaces, rings and bracelets is now available in START and will be made available to purchase online any moment!  Can’t wait?  You can ring (+44 207 7033 3951) or email us (onlineshop@start-london.com) for immediate adornment.

Start: The Party…/

Iconic British brand Mulberry made its way East last night as Start hosted a packed out in-store party to celebrate the launch of Mulberry: the Book.

The book is a glimpse inside Mulberry’s world, a fly on the wall, warts and all journey through the past two years of the brand’s life. The result is 480 pages of exquisite, never-before-seen images: a candid glimpse into the life of this quintessentially English luxury fashion brand. Shot by renowned photographer and regular Mulberry collaborator Venetia Dearden, the book captures the brand’s recent success and its arrival on the world stage.

To celebrate, we guzzled cocktails by Hoxton’s newest concoction Hoxton Gin; the Hoxton Gin & Tonic, Spring Collins and the Hoxton Mojito, whilst the dandiest of DJs and fellow Shoreditch resident, Andrew Weatherall, manned the decks.

Zara Martin headed home with her very own (blow up) Bayswater and Eliza Doolittle managed to squeeze in a spot of shoe shopping. However, as always, Gladys and Pixie stole the show in their gifted Mulberry hoodies.

The celebrations were topped off with a dedicated pop-up-book-style Mulberry window, decadently iced cake slices and Bayswater bag balloons, which this morning could be seen lining some of the best streets in Shoreditch …

Happy 40th Birthday Mulberry!
